Young the Giant started as “The Jakes” and consisted of five members that created the group in 2014, in the city of Irvine, California. The formation changed a couple of times and in 2008 the group consisted of Sameer Gadhia (vocals, guitar e.t.c.), Jacob Tilley (guitar, synthesizer), François Comtois (drums), Ehson Hashemian (keyboards, piano) and Eric Cannata (guitar e.t.c.). They were joined later by Payam Doostzadeh (bass, synthesizer) and in 2009 they took part in the “South by Southwest” fest in Austin, while some of their songs from their EP “Shake My Hand” (with drummer Jason Burger who left in 2008), were played in a few TV shows.
The group began recording their first album and changed their name to Young the Giant. Their sound was something between indie rock and alternative rock, with elements of indie pop and before the release of their self-titled album, they performed live with other rock bands, like Neon Trees and The Futureheads. The album came out in January of 2011 (it was available for downloading three months earlier), with the song “My Body” to separate. Young the Giant began receiving flattering comments and appeared in fests and live shows, including the MTV Video Music Awards of that year.
“Mind over Matter”, the group’s second album, came out in the beginning of 2014 and peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, containing the song “It’s About Time”, while they followed a new tour in North America, during the next fall. “Home of the Strange”, Giant’s third album was released in August of 2016 and managed to reach no. 12 on the US album chart. It was followed by “Mirror Master” in October of 2018, which entered at a lower position on the Billboard 200 chart (no. 69), even from their debut album.
