Elvis Costello was born in Paddington, London, in 1954 and went to live in Twickenham, where he followed his first studies. His real name is Declan Patrick MacManus and when he became 16, he went to Birkenhead, he created a duo with Allan Mayes and finished his education. He worked in various jobs until he returned to London and after forming a small band for 2 years, he made his first contract and began using the name "Elvis Costello".
His first album, "My Aim Is True", came out in 1977, with the help of the "backup" group, named "Clover". Later, Costello created "the Attractions" and after he was forbidden to play the song "Radio Radio", he managed to perform it on SNL. That was the main reason why he became more famous in the USA. He released his second album, "This Year's Model" in 1978 and continued touring with the Attractions. He worked also as a songwriter and his next album, "Armed Forces" came out less than one year later, with the hits "Oliver's Army" and "Accidents Will Happen" to separate. "Get Happy!!", an album with R&B, soul and ska elements was his next work.
He record eight albums (one with covers) along with the Attractions, until their dissolution in 1984. "Imperial Bedroom" and "Punch the Clock" were the most successful. Costello continued his live appearances and collaborations and after the album "King of America", he reunited with the Attractions only for the release of the successful "Blood and Chocolate", in 1986. The album "Out of Our Idiot", with rare and unreleased tracks followed, while his twelfth, "Spike", included the song "Veronica", that gave him the "Best Male Video" MTV Award, in 1989.
In the following years, Costello recorded five more albums until 1996, two last with the Attractions and one more with covers. He collaborated with many artists, he toured and appeared in live shows and he formed "The Imposters", his second backing band. After the compilation album "Extreme Honey" in 1997, he made a new deal with Universal Music Group and released "Painted From Memory", a cooperation with Burt Bacharach, in September of 1998. During that period, Costello recorded and wrote songs for movies and other projects.
The next decade, Costello released 6 albums (one classical and two with the Imposters), he toured with the Imposters, he appeared in several live shows, events films and series, he collaborated with many great artists and won various awards. After the album "National Ransom" in 2010, he released the memoir "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink" in 2015, which was nominated for "Best Spoken Word Album" in the following Grammy Awards. He released one more album with the Imposters, under the name "Look Now", in 2018.
