Blood Orange is the name of the project that talented English musician Dev Hynes uses after 2010. He was born in late 1985 in East London (his full name is David Joseph Michael Hynes) and his first steps in music were with a group named Test Icicles, between 2004 and 2006. He was the main guitarist and after their dissolution in 2006, he began his solo career.
Hynes’s first album as Lightspeed Champion came out in January of 2008, under the name “Falling Off the Lavender Bridge” and contained indie rock and folk sounds. He toured with a group consisting of various musicians and with the participation of famous artists like Alex Turner, taking part in many live shows and events, for about two years. He took a break due to a throat problem and he returned on stage in 2009. After a lot of releases, Lightspeed Champion’s second and last album “Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You” came out in February of 2010.
Blood Orange’s sound was something between R&B and electronic music, with funk, indie rock and new wave elements. The first album named “Coastal Grooves” came out in the summer of 2011 and was followed by 2013’s “Cupid Deluxe”, which included collaborations with several musicians. Blood Orange continued performing live in festivals and other live shows and his next album was “Freetown Sound” that came out in the summer of 2016, receiving positive reviews. Blood Orange’s most recent album is “Negro Swan”, featuring artists such as Puff Daddy, ASAP Rocky and more, peaking at no. 13 on the Independent Albums chart in the USA.
