Bloc Party were created by Kele Okereke (vocals, guitar e.t.c.) and Russell Lissack (lead guitar, synthesizer e.t.c.) in 1999, in London. They recruited Gordon Moakes (bass and other), and Matt Tong (drums) later in 2002 and they chose their final name, one year later. The band’s songs from their first homonymous EP attracted the attention of a few labels and they signed their first contract in 2004. Bloc Party started as an indie-rock band, with a lot of post-Britpop music style, while later they put elements of alternative dance in their music.
“Silent Alarm” was the Party’s first album, which came out in February of 2015, peaking at no. 3 on the UK charts. It contained the songs “So Here We Are/Positive Tension” and “Two More Years” and became platinum in the UK. The band toured around the USA for about 1.5 years, while “Silent Alarm” was released in a remixed version a few months later. It was followed by “A Weekend in the City”, that came out in early 2007, and it is their highest album in both UK and USA charts, reaching no. 2 and no. 12 respectively. It became also platinum in the UK, including the songs “The Prayer”, “Flux” and “I Still Remember”. Bloc Party began touring first in the UK (they took part in the famous Live Earth event) and they continued in Australia, New Zealand and in the USA later.
Party’s next album “Intimacy”, came out in August of 2008, with the song “Mercury” to separate. After several live appearances and the release of “Intimacy Remixed”, the group remained inactive for the period of 2009 to 2011, while the members dealt with other projects. They finally returned to the studio in 2011 and recorded their fourth album “Four”, which came out in August of 2012 and managed to reach the third place on in the UK.
While Bloc Party were in a tour in 2013, Tong decided to leave the band and they continued with Sarah Jones on drums. Before they finish their next album, Moakes abandoned the band and he was replaced by Louise Bartle later in 2015, while Justin Harris had become the bassist, during the band’s tour in the same year. Their last studio album until today is 2016's “Hymns".
